Vow & Dedication
The people of Jerusalem responded last week by taking steps of obedience and worshiping God. This week we had the opportunity to see them take their obedience to the next level by making substantive vows to God. Teaching Pastor, Russell Johnson, helped us see how their vows toward God’s rules could be considered “house rules”. The nation of Israel didn’t want to fall into the same trap that they had fallen into prior to the exile. As a way to prevent that from happening, they put into a binding contract that they would follow certain procedures to make sure that they put God’s rules – and their relationship with Him – first. While the New Testament cautions followers of Jesus from making vows, this instance in the history of Israel should help us see our need for putting our relationship with God first and foremost. What “house rules” do you need to set up in your life to help you? What stakes do you need to drive in the ground to remind you of your most important relationship?
