FOCUS QUESTION

Who is Jesus?

Jesus is the most influential person in history (TIME Magazine).

“First, if he claims to be God and yet in fact is not, he has to be a madman or a lunatic.

Second, if he is neither God nor a lunatic, he has to be a liar, deceiving others by his lie.

Third, if he is neither of these, he must be God. You can only choose one of the three possibilities… There is no need for us to prove if Jesus of Nazareth is God or not. All we have to do is find out if He is a lunatic or a liar. If He is neither, He must be the Son of God.”

Here is a “Creed” that the church has used for almost 1700+ years to describe who God is. Go through it line by line and see what it might bring up in conversation. What are the most confusing parts? What are the simplest parts?

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Share stories of how God has been these things to you
If they ask hard questions, write them down and get back to them next time!

HOMEWORK

Try keeping the conversation going throughout the week. Send a text, a quote, or a post your disciple might like. Part of discipleship is showing genuine love toward the individual outside of focused time.
Prepare for how you might share your story of coming to know Jesus. Be ready to tell this story at the next meeting.
