8/10 | WHAT IS THE CHURCH?

Week 8

FOCUS QUESTION

What is the Church?

β€œWe do not want a church that will move with the world. We want a church that will move the world.”  (G.K. Chesterton)

β€œThe church changes the world not by making converts but by making disciples.” (John Wesley)

β€œThe church is not a select circle of the immaculate, but a home where the outcast may come in.” (James H. Aughey)

TALK

  • Discuss the focus question and the quotes. Take some time to talk about past church experience (if any). What are your perceptions of the church? πŸ’¬

TEACH

  • Acts 2:42-47
  • Hebrews 10:23-25
  • Walk through each of these passages. πŸ“–
  • What does the church look like in the first century right after Jesus ascends? What sticks out to you? What is the church and why do we gather?
  • Tip β€” Remember you can still access Bible-reading guides in earlier lessons or on the RADIUS App.

TEACH +

If you want more help on what the Church should be, here are some other places to look! πŸ‘€

  • The Church = The Bride of Jesus   (Revelation 21:1-4)
  • The Church = The House / Household of Jesus   (Ephesians 2:19-22)
  • The Church = The Priesthood of Jesus   (1 Peter 2:9)
  • The Church = The Flock of Jesus   (John 10:14-16)
  • The Church = The Branches of Jesus   (John 15:1-6)
  • The Church = The Light of Jesus   (Matthew 5:14-16)

HOMEWORK

  • Be the church.
  • Bless three people this week (see IDEAS below).
  • Continue in accountability, Bible reading, and prayer πŸ—“οΈπŸ™πŸ“–

IDEAS for HOMEWORK

  • Generosity: (i.e. cook / buy some folks a meal)
  • Act of service: (do someone’s yard work, cleaning, decorating, babysitting, etc.)
  • Words of affirmation: (send someone a note of some kind, a voice message, or address someone in person and tell them what positive things you have seen in them)
