Week 9
FOCUS QUESTION
What is the world?
“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” (Mahatma Gandhi)
“Christians should live in the world, but not be filled with it. A ship lives in the water; but if the water gets into the ship, she goes to the bottom. So Christians may live in the world; but if the world gets into them, they sink.” (D.L. Moody)
TALK
- Discuss the focus question and quotes 💬
TEACH
- 1 John 2:15-17 📖
- Romans 12:1-2
- Question: Doesn’t God say He loves the world in John 3:16 — can we both love and hate the world??
- Answer: The way the writers of the Bible (especially John) use “world” often means something like, “what the world wants.” In this way, God loves the world (all of creation), but He hates what the world wants. We want things that are evil, and God hates this.
- Other questions to discuss: What does living sacrifice mean? How can we be a daily living sacrifice? What does it mean, “do not conform” or “Do not copy” the world’s behaviors?
TASK
- Identify good ways to love the world this week.
- Identify good ways to look different than the world this week.
HOMEWORK
- Have one meal with a nonbeliever. Have one meal with a believer.
- Welcome someone into your home and have a conversation — this does not have to be a gospel conversation, but don’t fear talking about God‼️
- Practice fasting from one thing this week (social media, a hobby, a habit, etc.). Fast together from food on one particular day.
