Week 7

How do I stop doing the wrong thing?

“Man’s nature, so to speak, is a perpetual factory of idols.” (John Calvin)

“You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” (Augustine)

Sin is what makes us less than the glorious creatures we were created to be. It is the rebellion against the Words of God, against our very design, and against True Love Himself.

Discuss the focus question and quotes ๐Ÿ’ฌ

What does it mean that we cannot rest until we rest in God? Why would sin make us less than we were created to be?

  • John 14:26
  • Colossians 3:1-17
  • Read through these passages and then walk through them together. Keep the focus question in mind as you do this.
  • Potentialโ“โ“to ask โ†’ Do you know who the Holy Spirit is? Do you believe that the Holy Spirit is within you? What does this mean? What does it mean to put off the old self? How can we focus on heavenly things? What is an “idol”?

What are your idols? Identify the things on the sheet that are the most true of you. Again, a good indicator of an idol is what takes the most of your time, attention, and resources.

Or, which out of those would be (or has been) really, really hard to give up?

Consider and discuss.

  • Success.
  • Looks.
  • Money.
  • Comfort.
  • Relationships.
  • Family.
  • Sports / Sports Teams.
  • Drugs or substances.
  • Social Media.
  • Phones.
  • Entertainment.
  • Sex / Sexuality / Pornography.
  • Control / Security.
  • Approval.
  • Comparison.
  • Friendships.
  • Video Games.
  • Hunting / Fishing / Outdoor Hobbies.
  • Work.
  • School.
  • Future Dreams.
  • Children.
  • Girlfriend / Boyfriend.
  • Approval.

  • This homework will be for you to decide. There might be things needed for accountability with relationships, addictions, and other forms of sin that you can guide this person through with truth and love.
  • Continue in your reading and prayer plans ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ“–
